  • ISO20400 International Sustainable Procurement standard update

    6 Feb 2017 11:31 am

The final round of discussions for the forthcoming ISO20400 International Standard for Sustainable Procurement has taken place, and the standard is due for release this year. In December 2016, representatives from multiple countries met in Rio, Brazil, to finalise the standard, which is designed to provide guidance for organisations seeking to incorporate sustainability principles in their procurement policies and practices.

GECA’s Shaila Divakarla, representing Sustainable Business Australia, was a member of the Australian delegation to the ISO meeting. The final version of the standard specifically highlights third-party certifications as a legitimate and credible tool for enabling sustainable procurement.

“I think the timing of the standard is perfect given the serious environmental and social risks in supply chains that organisations worldwide are currently facing,” said Shaila. “This will be a valuable tool for all stakeholders involved in the procurement process, and GECA is proud to have played a significant part in its development.”

The standard is due for release in its final form via direct publishing in March 2017.

A website is currently in development by Action Sustainability to help people share knowledge about the standard around the world, and to collect data on how organisations rate themselves against key aspects of the standard. The website is due to be launched in conjunction with the release of the final standard.

To find out more about the standard, you can watch an introductory video here. GECA’s Shaila Divakarla has also participated in an ISEAL webinar discussing the standard, focussing on where third-party certification (such as the GECA ecolabel) fits into the standard. The webinar is available here – the password is available on the website itself, in the text above the video.
