Update: This standard has now been superseded, please see new equivalent standard.

Panel boards are used largely as a means of lining in construction, as well as several other applications such as interior screens and parts of furniture. In Australia, approximately 30% by weight of resources disposed of in landfills is construction and demolition waste. A significant proportion of this waste is comprised of panel boards.

The Panel Boards (GECA 04-2011 v2i) standard seeks to define good environmental performance benchmarks for panel boards throughout their entire life cycle.  This includes minimising the impact of the end-use phase through rewarding products that use less material, maximise recyclability, minimise hazardous ingredients and contaminants, and use environmentally preferable materials sourcing.

Hence a variety of materials are used in the production of panel boards, such as timber, gypsum, plastics, aluminium, steel, fibre cement and engineered wood products.

This standard is applicable to a range of panel board products used for interior fit-out applications such as interior panelling and as a component of furniture. This includes:

🔸 Particle Boards
🔸 Edge Glued Panels
🔸 Fibre Cement Boards
🔸 Plasterboard or gypsum board
🔸 Ceiling tiles
🔸 Boards made from plastics and other polymers, textile fibres, metals, glass, engineered timber and natural fibre products.

This standard excludes exterior siding or cladding, or materials with a structural function in buildings. Other environmentally innovative panel board products that do not fit the above categories may be considered for certification provided the product fulfils the requirements of any relevant sections of this Standard. Other categories may be added at a later date.

GECA’s Panel Boards (GECA 04-2011 v2i) standard is recognised by GBCA at Level A. Download the GECA Green Star Brochure

What our clients say about us

Being an environmentally aware business, we needed a way to ensure, adhere and implement sustainably preferable strategies into our business plan. The process is credible and well-received in the market place and ensures that we are set apart from the not-so-genuine ‘greenwashing’ companies.
