At GECA, we know that procurement decisions hold the power to shape a more sustainable, circular future. That’s why we’re proud to be a supporting member of the Better Buildings Partnership (BBP) and active participants in its Circular Economy Working Group. Together, we’re taking bold steps to ensure our built environment is designed for longevity, adaptability, and a future without waste.
This month marks a significant milestone in our collective journey towards a circular economy: the release of the BBP’s Circular Economy Procurement Best Practice Guideline, a practical tool to help the property and construction sectors reimagine procurement as a powerful enabler of circularity. This guideline is relevant for:
• Facility managers
• Contract managers
• Procurement teams
• Asset managers
• Sustainability and ESG teams
Why This Guideline Matters
Procurement has long been recognised as a key driver of sustainability outcomes. Yet implementing circular economy principles across complex supply chains remains a challenge. Developed collaboratively by BBP members and circular economy experts from thinkstep-anz, this new guideline provides a clear roadmap to bridge the gap between ambition and action.
It outlines a comprehensive approach to embedding circular economy principles throughout the building lifecycle, including each critical stage of the procurement process. At every step, it offers practical actions, case studies, and resources to support stakeholders in aligning their procurement practices with circularity goals.
Notably, the guideline connects with the waste hierarchy and contributes to broader industry ambitions, such as reducing embodied carbon, improving material recovery, and enabling regenerative systems.
For GECA, this work strongly aligns with our mission to empower specifiers, procurement professionals, and manufacturers to make better choices for people and planet. It also supports our role in developing lifecycle ecolabel standards and verification services that embed circular thinking across supply chains.
By embedding circular economy principles into procurement, we can reduce waste, conserve resources, and unlock long-term value across our buildings and infrastructure. GECA is proud to support this vital initiative, and we encourage our community of licensees, partners, and sustainability advocates to explore the new guideline and join the conversation.
Together, let’s transform procurement into a catalyst for circular change.
